Employee wellness is an important issue for companies both big and small. Keeping employees healthy means businesses can lower health plan utilization, thereby lowering health benefit costs, and consequently increasing earnings. Studies have also shown that workers are more likely to be on the job and performing well when they are feeling good both physically and mentally. While many companies are instituting very comprehensive and expensive workplace wellness programs, there are a few simple things a company can do to make sure their employees stay healthy.
One of the easiest things you can do to keep your employees healthy is to install a self sanitizing water treatment system in the workplace. Drinking high quality water can help an employee feel better, thus possibly increasing their work productivity.
Your body is estimated to be about 60 to 70 percent water. Blood is mostly water, and your muscles, lungs, and brain all contain a lot of water. That gives you the number of ounces of water per day that you need to drink.
For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, you should drink at least 80 ounces of water per day. If you exercise you should drink another eight ounce glass of water for every 20 minutes you are active. If you drink alcohol, you should drink at least an equal amount of water. When you are traveling on an airplane, it is good to drink eight ounces of water for every hour you are on board the plane. If you live in an arid climate, you should add another two servings per day.
As you can see, your daily need for water can add up to quite a lot. That’s why it is a good idea for companies to have an easily accessible drinking water cooler in the workplace. But that cooler needs to provide water that is clean and distilled. Otherwise it could actually make your employees sick. Most coolers need to be sanitized at least every six months to prevent the potential risk of microbiological contamination within the cooler. If the cooler is not sanitized, bacteria and slime begin to form inside the cooler which results in water that is not healthy for employees to drink.
According to the American Journal of Public Health, 35% of all gastro-intestinal illness is water related and preventable. The financial implications can be enormous. In many instances, the cost of one person being absent for one day due to a gastro-intestinal illness can be as high as $500. To eliminate this risk and to make sure employees are drinking clean and safe water, it is advisable to install a self sanitizing water treatment system in the workplace rather than just a drinking water cooler.
Providing a water treatment system in the workplace can also increase employee morale. A national survey among 500 human resource managers indicates that there is clearly a desire for treated drinking water among employees.
