How To Purify Water: Secrets of Modern Water Systems

The rise of urbanization has resulted in a dire problem: water contamination and subpar public water filtration systems. While local institutions try their best to properly treat their water, dated purification systems result in the adding of chemicals, such as flouride, to be added into the water supply. If ingested in large quantities, this treated water can  result in negative health consequences. Fortunately, there are ways to purify your own water supply.  Below are some of the purification techniques Mirex uses in our water systems:

Reverse Osmosis

reverse osmosis_water systemsBy reversing the biological mechanism of osmosis, we are able to filter our particles and ions. External pressure is applied to water so that it passes through a semi-permeable membrane. The membrane is designed so that only water can penetrate through, leaving other particles and contaminants behind.


Water is infused with ozone (O3) to kill off microorganisms and other bacteria. Ozone is a gas that is created by exposing oxygen molecules to high levels of energy. By oxygenizing the water, you make it both cleaner and richer.

UV Light Exposure

Like ozonation, UV light exposure kills microorganisms and bacteria. Ultra violet light has a short enough wave length so that it inhibits nucleic acids thereby paralyzing necessary cellular functions. As a result, many of the microorganisms are sterilized.


Like filtration, distillation physically separates particles and contaminants from the mixture. Water is boiled, evaporated and condensed in another chamber, leaving behind other particles that have a higher boiling point.

Water systems with built in distillers are particularly necessary for testing, experimentation, and chemical processing, making them a valuable resource in any laboratory.
